چکیده

In everyday disputes, and especially political disputes, people often use analogical arguments to support their views. For example, many of the arguments about the War in Iraq were regularly bolstered by analogical comparisons to WWII and Vietnam. Though logic and philosophy has always viewed analogical argumentation as suspect, analogical thinking has recently been studied and modelled extensively in cognitive science (see e.g., [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]). In this paper, we assess whether computational models of analogy can be safely applied to analogical argumentation. For various reasons, we conclude that they cannot because they are too powerful.

Boosting Analogical Arguments: The Effects of Goodness & Complexity on Everyday Arguments

The use of analogical arguments is most often associated with political argumentation. However, our previous studies have found that analogical arguments are not as convincing as factual arguments. Should politicians rethink their rhetorical techniques ? In this paper, several possible criticisms of previous findings are considered, to determine whether analogical arguments might be considered ...

Towards a Computational Model of Evaluating and Using Analogical Inferences

Reasoning by analogy is a central phenomena in cognition. Existing computational models of analogy provide accounts of how analogical inferences are generated, but do not specify how they might be evaluated or integrated with other methods of reasoning. This paper extends the model of analogical inference in structure-mapping theory in two ways. First, we propose techniques for the structural e...

Should Politicians Stop Using Analogies? Whether Analogical Arguments Are Better Than Their Factual Equivalents

In political argumentation, analogies are often used to convince an audience of one’s views. For example, in political debates leading up to the Iraq War, one such analogical argument was that Saddam Hussein was like Hitler and therefore Saddam should be forcibly ousted. But are all analogical arguments really convincing? In this paper we investigate whether analogical arguments are actually mo...

Domain-General Learning of Neural Network Models to Solve Analogy Task - A Large-Scale Simulation

Several computational models have been proposed to explain the mental processes underlying analogical reasoning. However, previous models either lack a learning component or use limited, artificial data for simulations. To address these issues, we build a domain-general neural network model that learns to solve analogy tasks in different modalities, e.g., texts and images. Importantly, it uses ...

Analogical Estimation

Analogy lets us make inferences from a better known example on to a less known one. Analogical estimation is a specific kind of analogical inference, namely, inferring the quantitative value of an unknown based on a known value from a similar example. We present Analogical Estimator, a computational model of analogical estimation. A key claim of this work is that we don’t need a separate mechan...
